Police Chief Joe Williams

Joe W. Williams has been Chief of the McKinney Police Department since October 2012. Chief Williams has more than 24 years of law enforcement experience.

Chief Williams began his career as a United States Marine in 1984. He proudly served our nation for eight years, including two years in the reserves, transitioning to a career in law enforcement with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office in 1990. In 1994 he moved to Texas, serving with the Frisco Police Department for 13 years while moving up in rank to Captain. He was then appointed Chief of Police for the Celina Police Department in 2007 and Deputy City Manager for the City of McKinney in 2011 prior to his appointment as Chief.

Chief Williams has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management from Sam Houston State University. He is a graduate of the 222nd session of the FBI National Academy and the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership and Command College. Chief Williams holds a Permanent Peace Officers License for the State of Texas and a Master Peace Officers License.

Chief Williams has been a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) since 2005. He is also a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. and the Texas Police Chief's Association.

The McKinney Police Department is currently Recognized by the Texas Police Chief's Association Law Enforcement Agency Best Practices program.
