About Krewe of Barkus

  • When: Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013
    12:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Where: Mitchell Park in Historic Downtown McKinney

Did you grow up reading the Sunday comics? Are you addicted to Disney? Do you dream of being a superhero? Then you will enjoy getting in character for this year's Barkus parade! Join us on Sunday, Feb. 10 in historical downtown McKinney when the 2013 Artistic Krewe of Barkus Parade celebrates animated characters from the Sunday funny papers, comic books, movies and television. It’s going to be Loony Tunes -- one big Toy Story!

Patterned after the legendary Mystic Krewe of Barkus in New Orleans, the event will feature a parade, festivities and shoppingDog Parade galore! Located at Mitchell Park just west of the Historic Downtown Commercial District, vendors will be on hand starting at 12:30 p.m. to showcase their products and services. The parade will begin promptly at 2 p.m., followed by the costume contest that is a must-see experience in itself. The theme for this year’s event is “Barkus Gets Animated...from Cartoons to Comics!”.

We're calling all cartoon characters that have touched our hearts and made us laugh. Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny may parade alongside your favorite Super Heroes. As in years past, it’s a family affair - the Simpsons, The Incredibles, and the Flintstones could be showing up. 101 Dalmatians will be there sniffing out a good time. The only limit is your imagination.

Owners and their canine companions dress according to the theme each year, and the entire family gets involved in the act! Barkus fun isn’t limited to dogs and their owners. Children may enter “Animated” floats and join in the parade. The route begins at Mitchell Park at the corner of Church St. and Louisiana St., proceeding east on Louisiana then north on Tennessee and finally west on Virginia ending back at Mitchell Park.
