Medication Disposal

Do NOT flush or pour unwanted, unused or expired medications, prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs down the drain.

Why Should You Care?

  • Flushed medications can get into our lakes, rivers and streams.
  • Research shows continuous exposure to low levels of medications alters the behavior and physiology of fish and aquatic organisms.
  • Pharmaceuticals enter our wastewater from a variety of sources, including the flushing of unused medications.
  • Medicines that are stored for a long period in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
  • Long-term exposure to low levels of medications, especially antibiotics, might result in drug-resistant microbes and bacteria.

Options for Disposal*

  • The Police Department hosts a Drug Take-Back event twice a year, usually in April and September.
  • Visit the Drug Enforcement Agency website and enter your zip code for a nearby collection location.
  • Medical City McKinney, 4500 Medical Center Dr., offers a DEA-compliant drug take-back receptacle in the emergency room lobby.
  • Walgreens Pharmacy has a secure take-back receptacle located near the customer counter in the pharmacy section of the store located at 1651 W. University Dr.

*Sharps are not considered medication; find out how to properly dispose of sharps.
