McKinney signs contract for statue in honor of the 50th anniversary of the movie Benji

Historic Downtown McKinney served as the primary outdoor filming location for the 1974 movie

McKINNEY, Texas (June 8, 2022) – The City of McKinney is pleased to announce a contract has been signed with nationally recognized artist and sculptor Susan Norris for a statue to be installed in Historic Downtown McKinney that will commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the movie Benji. Downtown McKinney served as the primary outdoor filming location for the movie.

The artwork will be revealed at a ceremony in February 2023 alongside a special film screening. The sculpture will be installed on the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Tennessee and Virginia streets.

The original Benji film was written, produced, and directed by Joe Camp and opened in 1974. The film grossed $45 million on a budget of $500,000, and its theme song received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

The statue is funded by the City of McKinney and administered by the McKinney Arts Commission with support from the Daisy Riddle Family in memory of their beloved dog.
