Fire - Senior Fall Prevention Tips
Show All Answers
1.
Be aware of uneven surfaces.
Use only throw rugs that have rubber, non-skid backing.
Smooth out wrinkles and folds in carpeting.
Be cautious when walking on driveways, lawns or sidewalks.
2.
Clear the way.
Keep stairs and walkways free of electrical cords, shoes, clothing, books, magazines, slippery rugs and other clutter.
3.
Exercise regularly.
Exercise builds strength and improves your balance and coordination. Ask your doctor about the best physical exercise for you.
4.
Look out for yourself.
See an eye doctor once a year. Poor vision can increase your chances of falling.
Improve the lighting in your home.
Use night lights to light the way between your bedroom and the bathroom.
Always turn on lights before using stairs.
5.
Put your best foot forward.
Wear sturdy, well-fitted, low-heeled shoes with non-slip soles. These types of shoes are safer than high heels, thick-soled athletic shoes, stocking feet or bare feet.
6.
Take your time.
Get out of chairs slowly.
Sit a moment before you get out of bed
Stand and get your balance before you walk.
Be aware of your surroundings.
7.
Tread carefully.
Stairways should be well lit from the top and the bottom.
Have easy to grip, secure handrails along the full length of both sides of the stairs.
8.
Wipe up spilled liquids immediately.
Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors.
Install grab bars on the wall in the tub or shower and next to the toilet.
Keep your kitchen floor clean and dry.
